Bhubaneswar: Odisha is witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures following the easing of rains, with coastal districts bearing the brunt of the October heat.

Puri recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6 degree Celsius on Monday, the second-highest October temperature in the coastal town’s 130-year weather history.

Paradip and Bhubaneswar also recorded unusually high temperatures at 36.5 degree Celsius and 35.8 degree Celsius, respectively.

The temperature in Puri was 4.1 degree Celsius above normal, while Paradip and Bhubaneswar recorded departures of 4.3 degree Celsius and 3.5 degree Celsius, respectively.

According to weather records dating back to 1896, Puri’s highest October temperature was 36.7 degree Celsius, making Monday’s reading the second-highest for the month.

The sudden increase in daytime temperatures has come after the recent spell of rain subsided across much of the state.

Weather conditions are changing as the southwest monsoon enters its withdrawal phase, resulting in a gradual weakening of the monsoon flow.

With reduced cloud cover, solar heating has intensified, leading to a rise in daytime temperatures in several parts of the state.

The combination of high humidity and rising temperatures has made conditions particularly uncomfortable in coastal Odisha.

However, the heat is likely to be accompanied by spells of rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department had issued a yellow warning for nine districts for Tuesday, forecasting the possibility of rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

The weather office indicated that the prevailing conditions could continue for another two to three days, with temperatures remaining high in several areas even as some districts receive rain and thunderstorms.

The contrasting weather pattern — hot and humid conditions in several areas alongside the possibility of thunderstorms — is expected to persist as Odisha transitions further into the post-monsoon phase.
