BHUBANESWAR: A powerful Nor’wester storm swept across parts of Odisha on Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction in the districts of Kalahandi and Koraput, where strong winds and heavy rain disrupted normal life, uprooted trees and affected road connectivity and power supply.
In Kalahandi district, the storm battered Bhawanipatna town with intense gusty winds accompanied by heavy rainfall, causing widespread inconvenience to residents. Trees were uprooted at several locations, disrupting traffic and daily activities across the town.
In one of the major incidents, a tree reportedly collapsed onto an electricity transformer, triggering power outages in several areas of Bhawanipatna. Authorities were engaged in restoration work even as residents grappled with the impact of the sudden weather disturbance.
The Nor’wester also caused significant damage in the Lamtaput region of Koraput district. Near Guneipada village, heavy rain and strong winds uprooted a large tree that fell across the main road, completely blocking vehicular movement.
The obstruction brought traffic on the crucial Lamtaput–Machkund road to a halt for a considerable period, leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides of the route. Local authorities later initiated efforts to clear the road and restore movement.
The sudden storm activity brought temporary relief from the prevailing heat but caused considerable damage to infrastructure and disrupted normal life in the affected regions.
