Hyderabad: Y.S Sharmila, the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy, was named as the Congress President of the state unit on Tuesday. Her affiliation with the Congress began on January 4, coinciding with the announcement of the merger of her YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) into the Congress.

This decision from the Congress leadership followed Gidugu Rudra Raju's resignation from the position of Andhra Pradesh's President a day earlier. In an official statement, the Congress declared the appointment of the outgoing PCC President of Andhra Pradesh, Rudra Raju, as a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

Prior to the Assembly polls in Telangana, Sharmila strategically withdrew from the electoral race to prevent a potential division of votes, which could have favored former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. Sharmila had previously declared YSRTP's support for the Congress in the Telangana Assembly polls scheduled for November 30.
