Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday laid the foundation, in front of the Telangana Secretariat, to install a statue of former PM Rajiv Gandhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Revanth Reddy said Rajiv Gandhi revolutionised the telecom sector, besides other sectors, during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India. The statue would inspire political leaders to follow his ideology of serving the people, he said.

“Rajiv Gandhi gave his life for the integrity of the country. His statue is not just for garlanding on birthdays and anniversaries. All political leaders must take inspiration and replicate his vision,” the Chief Minister said.

“One side, there is a statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and on the other side, of Indira Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao and Jaipal Reddy, all in the vicinity of the Secretariat,” Revanth Reddy said.

The Chief Minister said AICC leader Sonia Gandhi would be invited to unveil the statue.

However, the BRS found fault with the Congress’ decision, with MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy saying the spot was earmarked for a statue of Telugu Talli and that Rajiv Gandhi had no relation to Telangana in particular.
