Calcutta HC allows Mamata Banerjee's TMC meeting in Hooghly on Sept 26 at Sreerampore Court Ground, capping the crowd at 1,000
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee to address her party meeting at Sreerampore in Hooghly of West Bengal on September 26.
While passing the order, Justice Sougata Bhattacharya of the HC however set a list of conditions including a change in venue for a smooth law and order situation in and around the location on the day of the event.
According to the HC directions, Ms Banerjee's meeting will be held at Sreerampore Court Ground instead of Mahesh Jagannathdev Snanpiri Maidan where she was earlier supposed to address on September 11.
Justice Bhattacharya also ordered the inspector-in-charge of Sreerampur police station to provide adequate security and permit the TMC to hold their meeting at the ground peacefully and limited the number of participants to 1,000.
Initially, the TMC had sought during the hearing a gathering of 2,000 participants to be allowed by the HC to its meeting. The state government however objected to the plea, citing lack of space for it for security reasons.
Last week, Justice Bhattacharya had allowed Ms Banerjee to address her meeting at Mahesh on September 11. The venue, however, turned out to be private property, the owner of which immediately moved a petition against the order.
The state government also challenged the order before a division bench headed by the Chief Justice of the HC which later sent the prayer back to Justice Bhattacharya to decide on it before September 25.
