Vijayawada: In an organisational shake-up on Sunday, AICC president Rahul Gandhi removed party senior leader, Digvijay Singh as AP party affairs incharge and appointed former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy in his place.

Party general secretary Ashok Gehlot issued a statement in this regard on Sunday.

Mr Singh was appointed the AP affairs incharge in June 2013, and continued continued to be incharge of the two Telugu states until he was removed as TS affairs incharge last August.

“Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Oommen Chandy as general secretary AICC incharge of Andhra Pradesh with immediate effect. The party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Digvijaya Singh, who will be stepping down from his responsibility,” said the brief statement.

Mr Singh was accused by the Telangana Congress leaders of failing to take on the ruling dispensation and of being unable to control infighting.

In AP too, state party leaders feel that Mr Singh had failed to establish his presence over the  last few months even as the state was witnessing a bitter situation with the sentiment for Special Category Status (SCS) peaking. Mr Singh was not successful in galvanising the public mood to the advantage of the Congress, it was said.
