No attempt made to address grievances, Centre responsible for CAA clashes: Yechury

New Delhi: Appealing for peace as protests in northeast Delhi turned violent with clashes between anti-CAA and pro-CAA groups claiming the life of a police head constable and injuring a DCP, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday held the Centre responsible for the violence.

Protesters torched houses, shops and vehicles, and hurled stones at each other in Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Chand Bagh localities, a day ahead of the visit of US President Donald Trump to Delhi on Tuesday.

"There is utmost need to maintain peace and calm. We appeal to everyone to not fall prey to rumours or incitements - Peace must be kept. The responsibility however, lies with the Union govt which has not made any attempt to address grievances of a large section of Indians," Yechury tweeted. 

“CAA-NRC-NPR “chronology” and methods, all endanger the very status of the majority of our people. Instead of securing their lives, they will spend a lifetime securing papers. Modi govt must stop NPR and repeal CAA,” Yechury recently said on Twitter.

On Friday, the Left leader spoke about the difficulties a large population would face if the government pushed ahead with the NRC and NPR. He referred to a study conducted by Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerji and Esther Duflo’s institute J-PAL, which established that there are very high risks of harassment of genuine poor and marginalised sections by terming their papers false and their documents dubious.

J-PAL surveyed over 3,900 households in Jharkhand found that a significant number of ration cards cancelled during a filtering process three years ago were genuine. “The CAA-NRC-NPR is devised for this harassment,” Yechury said, quoting the report.
