Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Dr K. Laxman said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) does not affect the rights of Muslims and Hindus.

Participating in a live chat on Facebook at his party office on Sunday, Dr Laxman said that the right to citizenship in India is still under the 1955 Act, but the Congress, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the rest of the parties were “blinded by religious fanaticism” and had been speaking against the Act without understanding its spirit.

He said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was making a big hue and cry against the CAA as she feared losing votes in the ensuing elections in the state.

He said the TRS should openly spell out its reasons for opposing the CAA, and alleged that TRS president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao was opposing the Act as he was afraid of the MIM, his ally.

Dr Laxman said that the BJP will launch an awareness programme across the state against “disinformation” being spread on the CAA and National Register of Citizens and organise meetings with intellectuals and educationists to highlight the necessity and importance of CAA and to do away with fear among Muslims.
