Chennai: Breaking away from the usual grind of statistics and monotonous appeal for votes, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin enlivens the election campaign through casual punches, occasional film songs with a blend of humour to draw youth and women.

The usual chore of listing the achievements, giving the number of beneficiaries and the amount for each scheme allocated by the party’s government is absent in Stalin’s speeches.

The DMK treasurer who started his campaign in the usual note changed his style in Madurai, Coimbatore, Karur, Tiruchy and Perambalur. At a meeting at Kulithalai in Karur, he mentioned the names of senior leaders and their association with party leader M. Karunanidhi in an interesting manner.

Speaking in Tiruchy, he explained about his modern attire and casually joked that he is looking like a youth despite his age, sending the listeners into peals of laughter. He added that the trousers were convenient for cycling and riding two wheelers. Instead of pungent and direct attacks on Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, he listed the unpopular actions of the state government with an introduction that the AIADMK government had done even what it had not promised.

The monologue type of speeches had been replaced by question and answer sessions involving the audience, who are visibly enthusiastic while taking part in the meetings.

He occasionally sings film songs to draw the crowd attention. Campaigning for former state minister M. Kannappan’s son at M.K. Muthu at Udumalaipet, he mentioned the similarity in the initials of the candidate and himself and started singing “Enna porutham, namakkul enna porutham”, delighting the party nominee as well as the crowd.

While campaigning for Samathuva Samooga Padai Katchi candidate and Sivakami at Perambalur constituency, he got down from the campaign vehicle and started walking on the road, shaking hands with people and asking their support. He also had a cup of tea at a roadside shop.

In Madurai, seeking votes among the Saurashtra community, Stalin greeted the people in their language and spoke about their problems. At one of the campaigns, he attacked the AIADMK ministers and said they are sitting without chairs. Not stopping with this, he acted in the stage to show how the ministers are behaving in front of the Chief Minister.

However, he does not forget to highlight the promises in the party manifesto like waiver of educational loans, increase of procurement price of sugarcane, introduction of prohibition and generation of employment. The major points are delivered, but in an interesting manner to keep the crowd alive and draw their attention.
