A barnstorming tour for Rahul Gandhi

Wayanad: AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s prowess as an effective campaigner for the Congress was on full display in her whirlwind tour of Wayanad where her brother and party president Rahul Gandhi is a candidate. She moved the audience with her simple presentation of ideas and exposed the chinks in the armour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her speeches at Mananthavadi, Pulpalli and Nilambur on Saturday. and protect the farmers if they fail to repay the loans, provide free education to the poor up to ‘Plus-Two’ and ensure free healthcare for the poor.

Addressing a farmers’ meeting, including a large number of women, at Pulppalli, Priyanka said that to give relief to the farmers who have been hit hard by the policies of the Modi regime, the Congress will waive off farm loans. “Soon after we came to power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, we wrote off the loans of farmers within a few days,” she said.   To find out a holistic solution for the farmers’ issues, she said that every year the budget will propose action to be taken for them, schemes to be introduced and funds to be allotted.

She also promised to extend the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Empowerment Guarantee Scheme from 100 days to 150 days and strengthen it with more funds. A minimum income of Rs 72,000 will be ensured for the poor under the Nyay programme announced by the Congress.

Lashing out at the divisive and oppressive policies of the Modi regime, Priyanka said the former leaders of the country had fought for the freedom of its people, their beliefs, ideas, traditions and religions.  But for the last five years the government had been suppressing the voices of farmers, disempowering the people and demonizing their beliefs.

She reached Kannur airport in the morning and came to Mananthavadi in a chopper and attended a massive meeting there. After the function at Pulppalli. she spoke in Nilambur and also met the family members of CRPF soldier V.V. Vasanthkumar at Thrikkaipatta, Kalpetta.   She will stay overnight in a resort at Vythiri and leave for New Delhi from Karipur airport on Sunday.
