The biggest challenge before Rahul Gandhi, all set to take over as president of the Congress from his ailing mother Sonia Gandhi, is not whether he is accepted by the party but whether he can make the people accept the party as an alternative to the BJP.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congressmen in the state were in a jubilant mood as Mr Rahul Gandhi took over as  party president in New Delhi on Saturday. Senior leaders like Mr Ramesh Chennithala, Oommen Chandy and M.M. Hassan, who attended the programme,  said that  the Congress party was  on a revival path. "Under the leadership  of Rahul Gandhi, the country will see a great change,"  said Mr Chennithala and Mr Chandy.

The other leaders from the state who were present included MLAs K. C. Joseph, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, V. D. Satheesan, Anwar Sadath and Shafi Parambil, AICC secretary P. C. Vishnunath, former MLAs Benny Behanan and Joseph Vazhakkan and all the Congress MPs from Kerala.  CWC member A. K. Antony did not attend as he is convalescing  at his home in  Delhi following a fall he suffered in the toilet a few weeks ago. The KPCC distributed sweets  at Indira Bhavan here where former presidents Thennala Balakrishna Pillai and V. M. Sudheeran were present.  Youth Congress activists burst firecrackers to celebrate Mr Rahul's elevation.
