HYDERABAD: The landslide victory registered by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Tuesday in the MLC elections held for six seats under local bodies’ quota boosted the morale of the party.

The victory came at a time when party's morale was hit due to the shocking defeat in the hands of the BJP in the recent Huzurabad Assembly bypoll in November.

Although the TRS’ victory in the MLC polls was a foregone conclusion going by its absolute majority in local bodies, there were fears in party's rank and file that some TRS local bodies’ representatives may ditch the party during the polling to favour the Opposition BJP and the Congress in the wake of Huzurabad debacle.

However, the party's track record of winning all elections since 2014 barring Dubbak and Huzurabad Assembly bypolls remained intact after it won all the six MLC seats with a clear majority.

TRS leaders and cadre broke into celebrations across the state soon after the early trends gave a clear indication of the TRS making a clean sweep in MLC polls. A large number of party leaders and activists gathered at Telangana Bhavan, the party's headquarters in the city, and celebrated the victory by bursting crackers and distributing sweets among themselves. Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav led the celebrations at Pragathi Bhavan while ministers and TRS MLAs in respective districts celebrated at the party offices in districts.

With this victory, the TRS strength in the Legislative Council has increased to 36.

Out of a total 40 seats in the Legislative Council, the TRS now enjoys the absolute majority of 36.

Of the remaining four seats, AIMIM holds two seats, Congress one and independent one. The BJP has no representation in the House. No Opposition party has the required numbers in Legislative Council even to secure main opposition party status. Out of the 12 MLC seats under local bodies’ quota, which went for polls, the TRS had already won six seats unanimously while it swept the remaining six seats after the results were announced on Tuesday.
