Bengaluru: Setting a four-month deadline to streamline garbage clearance in the city, Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George on Tuesday said that the government has started negotiating with companies to generate power from garbage.

Mr George told reporters that both garbage dumping pits as well as compost units are running into trouble. The best way is to generate power from garbage and the government is taking it up in a big way, he said.

“First, the government has to break the mafia taking over garbage disposal system. They pay the employees less which results in tardy work. Now that the government has fixed the minimum wage, the work is returning to normal,” he said.

But to streamline the entire system, where 4,000 MT garbage is being disposed of every day, it will take three to four months, he said.

On the condition of roads across the city, he said that the road repair work will be taken on a war footing soon after the rains stop. As per reports, rains will stop in two or three days and the government is ready to take up the repair work immediately, he said.

Objecting  to BJP state president B.S. Yeddyurappa’s charge that the government has not done anything, he said that the government has already released '800 crore for upgrading drainage system and removal of encroachment in the city.

However, the procedure of preparing DPR and tender took a bit of time. Now, all the procedures are over, works will be taken up immediately, he said.
