Hyderabad: Ahead of Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao’s election contest from Kamareddy assembly constituency, the state government has sanctioned '195 crore for a drinking water project in the region. A new pipeline will be laid from the Sriram Sagar project to Mallannagutta for supply of drinking water.

The CM sanctioned the funds on priority basis following a request from government whip and Kamareddy MLA Gampa Govardhan.

Kamareddy town has been facing an acute drinking water shortage for the last few years. During Congress rule, a new pipeline had been laid from the Sriram Sagar project to Kamareddy town to meet the drinking water needs. Frequent breakdowns in the pipeline adversely affected the water supply. Earlier, the Kamareddy municipality supplied drinking water through tankers.

In view of the present drinking water shortage, many houses on rent turned vacant as the tenants could not bear with the situation.

MLA Gampa Govardhan alleged that the existing drinking water pipeline from Sriram Sagar project to Mallannagutta was constructed with inferior quality pipes and this resulted in the leakages. “People in a few colonies are getting drinking water for 10-12 days a month,” he said.

‘We brought the issue to the notice of the chief minister and he sanctioned '195 crore for the new pipeline works,” the MLA said.

The government issued GO-Ms-460 for laying of the new pipeline stretching 47km from the Sriram Sagar project to the Mallannagutta, he said.

Meanwhile, the state government is making arrangements to inaugurate the government medical college in Kamareddy on Sept 15. The Kamareddy college will be inaugurated by the CM along with all the nine new medical colleges. The admission process for MBBS has begun in Kamareddy.
