HYDERABAD: Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Karimnagar BJP MP and former state party president. on Friday demanded that those who allegedly desecrated the Chhatrapati Shivaji statue in Gajwel be immediately arrested.

Sanjay on Friday met with BJP workers from Gajwel, who were arrested for protesting against the incident, at the Karimnagar jail and expressed his and the party’s support to them. Sanjay said there was no question of the BJP letting such incidents slide and demanded accountability from the police.

“How can the police not take action against those who committed the crime and instead arrest those who were protesting the desecration? Why is the Chief Minister, in whose constituency such an act took place, silent on the issue,” Sanjay asked.

“The action by the police is unpardonable. When (party leader) Mahesh Goud questioned why action was not being taken, he was attacked. When local councillor Ravinder objected to the attack, he was threatened that he would be killed,” Sanjay said.

“When BJP workers protested, 30 people who supported those who had desecrated the statue set upon them. Several BJP workers received injuries on their heads. Despite a case being filed against 30 attackers, only six have been held so far while 11 BJP workers were arrested,” Sanjay said.

“Should the BJP stay silent when the SI was being attacked? What should one make of such blatant acts in the Chief Minister’s own constituency? The BJP will not take this lying down.”
