HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that some Opposition parties in the country that sought higher immunity from investigation by probe agencies were put in their place by the Supreme Court, which had refused to entertain their plea. Among the petitioners were the Congress and the BRS.

“Some parties, afraid that their corrupt activities are catching up with them, went to the court asking it for protection from anyone opening their corruption ledgers. But the court gave them a jolt and sent them back saying there is no special protection for them and that law is the same for everyone in the country,” Modi said at a public meeting at Parade Ground here.

It may be recalled that as many as 14 political parties led by Congress, approached the Supreme Court recently on the issue. The parties allied that the country was witnessing an alarming increase in the use of investigative agencies by the Centre to coerce those opposed to the central government to fall in line, a move that was also stifling dissent.

The Supreme Court, however, refused to entertain their plea saying that politicians do not enjoy any special rights and they are seen as equal in the eyes of the law.

The BRS from Telangana was one among the 14 parties that approached the Supreme Court. The others, in addition to Congress, were the RJD, DMK, AAP, NCP, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), JMM, CPM, CPI, JD (U), National Conference and the Samajwadi Party.
