Bengaluru: JD(S) patriarch H.D. Deve Gowda slammed TN CM J Jayalalithaa for exaggerating scarcity conditions in Cauvery basin even as he appealed to people of the state exercise restraint and maintain peace and order instead of agitating against the SC’s order for release of water to the neighbouring state.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr Gowda said: “Even this time, while seeking water for Samba crop, Ms Jayalalithaa is anticipating a failure of north-east monsoon though it has already set-in in Tamil Nadu. The forecasts indicate a torrential downpour. However, she went to court in anticipation and got an order for release of water.”

On the other hand, the state had no choice but to release water as directed by the court for a default would force the court to hand over the dispute to the monitoring committee. And once the committee steps in, it would ensure that water flows as per the order of the tribunal irrespective of storage levels in dams, he added.
