VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced that the state government will bear the cost of treating Dr N. Bhaskar Rao, a government doctor, who has been battling for his life at Care Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

Dr. Bhaskar Rao, 38, had been working as medical officer at the primary health centre in Karamchedu of Prakasam district. He tested positive for Covid-19. His wife, Dr Bhagyalaxmi, 38, who had been working as assistant professor in Guntur Medical College also tested positive for Covid. Both of them had been admitted to Government General Hospital, Guntur, on April 30, and given Remedesivir injections.

As Dr Bhaskar Rao’s condition worsened, he was shifted on May 9 to Yashoda Hospital at Somajiguda in Hyderabad. On May 10, he was put on ventilator and shifted to Care Hospital, Gachibowli. He was to be put on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and lungs transplant, but could not afford the cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

On getting to know the situation of the doctor from minister Balineni
Srinivasa Reddy, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy directed officials to
ensure that the doctor gets the best treatment for which the government will bear the cost.

Andhra Pradesh Doctors Association has thanked the CM for this gesture.

Minister’s decision will prompt government doctors in the state to work with more dedication and commitment in the fight against Coronavirus pandemic.
