Bengaluru: Amidst protests and slogans by Congress members, speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri kickstarted a special debate on ‘One Constitution and One Citizenship’ in the Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday.

The speech, loaded with glowing references to the motherland, set the stage for the ruling BJP to pass a resolution in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the next two days.

“Our country, being secular and federal in nature, believes in one nation and one citizenship,” Kaageri said.

Even as Congress members raised slogans against Nathuram Godse and the BJP, Kageri said every politician must join in support of the Constitution setting his or her political differences aside.
