Chennai: Citing Lok Sabha deputy speaker M. Thambidurai’s appeal to AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala to take over as Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin on Monday urged Governor CH. Vidyasagar Rao to ask Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam to prove his strength in the Assembly.

Taking strong exception to the statement, he demanded that Thambidurai should resign as the Lok Sabha deputy speaker before issuing such political statements.

Thambidurai had shamelessly used the letter pad of his deputy speaker post, Stalin said. He asked the LS deputy speaker not to create a constitutional crisis.
If Thambidurai is under compulsion to prove his party loyalty, he could resign his deputy speaker post and issue numerous statements. When Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam was elected to the post at midnight, the DMK was silent since it did not want the derailment of state administration. Within ten days of Panneerselvam assuming charge, AIADMK ministers surprised everyone by saying that he would step down to allow Sasikala to become Chief Minister, Stalin said.

Earlier, talking to reporters at Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence, Stalin asked why Panneerselvam is silent when there are demands from his own ministers that Sasikala should take over his post. When asked about the demands for defying the ban on jallikattu, Stalin said the DMK protest was aimed at insisting that the central and state governments hold the sport. The Centre is continuing to give assurances that jallikattu would be held this year. If the assurances were not met, defying the ban could be discussed. He also said the Centre's demonetisation move was a total failure.

The DMK treasurer also extended support to the road roko protests called by a few outfits of farmers demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and compensation for farmers who had lost their crops.

Stalin also said farmer suicides are continuing and complained that the government is not concerned about the plight of farmers and is not taking any action to mitigate their sufferings.
