New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday, followed later in the day by a meeting between Union home minister Amit Shah and the President. The visits fuelled speculation of a minor reshuffle in the Council of Ministers, a rumour that has been circulating for some time. Parliament is also abuzz with talk of a significant announcement marking the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

Sources clarified, however, that Modi’s meeting with the President was a routine briefing on his recent foreign trips to the United Kingdom and the Maldives. It is customary for the Prime Minister to update the President on such state visits.
During his UK visit, Modi signed a landmark trade agreement to boost bilateral commerce and met King Charles III, presenting him with a tree sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” environmental initiative. In the Maldives, Modi attended the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations and discussed deepening cooperation in defence and maritime security with President Mohamed Muizzu.
Shah’s meeting with President Murmu came one day before the Rajya Sabha is scheduled to consider the statutory resolution extending President’s Rule in Manipur from August 13. The Lok Sabha approved the resolution last week. Opposition parties have criticised the government for its handling of the ethnic violence in Manipur in 2023, its failure to restore normalcy, and Modi’s absence from the state since the unrest began.
