Pleas At Calcutta HC Against WB Govt Probe Panel Into Stadium Rampage

KOLKATA: West Bengal leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari and two others moved the Calcutta High Court on Monday challenging the inquiry committee, set up by chief minister Mamata Banerjee to probe the vandalism by furious fans of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi during his GOAT India Tour at Salt Lake Stadium.
The three parties alleged that the state government’s inquiry committee, which is headed by retired judge Asim Kumar Ray and also has chief secretary Manoj Panth and home secretary Nandini Chakraborty on board, has no power to probe the incident and hence it cannot conduct a proper probe.
They demanded a separate probe, including a court-monitored if needed. Mr Adhikari’s lawyer and another Sabyasachi Chatterjee drew the attention of a division bench of acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen in this regard. They appealed to the HC to constitute a separate probe panel.
The division bench allowed them to file their petitions. Apart from Mr Adhikari, another petitioner, Mainak Ghoshal, also sought a court-monitored probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or Enforcement Directorate for the financial misappropriation and ticket money refund to the deprived fans.
Meanwhile, five accused were arrested by the police in connection with the rampage. All of them are spectators and claimed that they were not involved in the vandalism. They are Basudeb Das, Sanjoy Das, Abhijit Das, Gourab Basu and Shubhrapratim De. They were identified while scanning the CCTV footage of the vandalism.
The five were produced at the Bidhannagar Court. The police however did not seek their custody but opposed their bail plea. The judge sent the five to jail custody. On the other hand, officials of six firms, which were engaged with the conduct of the event, have been summoned by the police for questioning on Tuesday. One of them works at Satadru Dutta Initiative, the event organiser.
