Mumbai: Calling Pahalgam terror attack ‘an attack on the nation,’ NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has supported the Congress’ demand for a special session of Parliament to discuss the matter. This would send out the message that the country is united on this issue, he said on Wednesday.

“The massacre of tourists in Kashmir an attack on the country. The government must call a special session to discuss the matter so that strict action can be taken against the organisations responsible for the Jammu Kashmir terror attack,” Pawar said in Thane.

His statement came on the backdrop of Congress’ demand to call a special parliamentary session to address the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge And Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has urged the government to convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament in response to the attack.

Pawar added that all political parties were united in their response to the attack. “Some of our colleagues have made a valid demand (for a special session of Parliament). The entire country is united on this issue. All parties and Parliament are united. A special session (on Pahalgam) would be useful to send this message to the world,” he said.

The veteran leader assured that his party will support the Centre in whatever steps it takes in this matter. “We will give complete support to whatever steps Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his colleagues take,” said the former defence minister.

Pawar, when asked about terrorists asking the religion of victims, said that the attack on Pahalgam is an attack on the country. “Those whose families were martyred in this attack have paid the price for this country. Therefore, now no one should bring the issues of religion, caste and language. If any forces are attacking Indians today, as countrymen, we will have to come together without expecting anything. We have full support for whatever measures the Prime Minister and other colleagues are taking in this regard,” he said.
