Overcrowding in Reserved Coaches: Viral Image Sparks Debate
A viral photo of an overcrowded sleeper coach triggered public concern over unreserved passengers in reserved compartments, prompting a response from Indian Railways.
A viral social media post has reignited the conversation around overcrowding in Indian trains, after a man shared a photograph of a sleeper coach packed beyond capacity, allegedly with several unreserved passengers occupying reserved berths.
The image, showing cramped conditions inside the coach, was posted with the caption highlighting how passengers with unreserved tickets were occupying reserved compartments, inconveniencing genuine ticket-holders. The post quickly gained traction online, with many users echoing similar concerns about frequent violations in sleeper-class coaches across the country.
Taking note of the post, Indian Railways officials responded via the same platform, requesting the user to share specific details including the train number, date of journey, and PNR to initiate corrective action. “Sir, please share your mobile number, PNR, and train details via DM so we can look into the matter,” the official handle of Indian Railways tweeted.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of overcrowding in the Indian rail network, especially during peak travel seasons and in long-distance trains. Experts point out that such situations not only cause discomfort but also pose safety concerns for all passengers.
While the Railways has taken measures like deploying ticket checking squads and increasing fines for unauthorized travel, implementation often falls short, passengers say. Calls have grown louder for stricter enforcement, better coach segregation, and expanding general class capacity to prevent spillover into reserved compartments.
This isn't the first time such an image has gone viral. Similar complaints have surfaced in the past, often drawing mixed reactions — with some sympathizing with the plight of unreserved passengers, and others demanding strict penalties for unauthorized travel in reserved sections.
As of now, Railway authorities have not issued a formal statement but are believed to be following up on the specific case.
