Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly will convene its monsoon session from September 18 to 25, with seven working days scheduled for discussions on key state issues, proposed legislations and debates between the treasury and opposition benches.

According to the Business Advisory Committee, one day of the session will be reserved for Private Members’ Bills and another for No Office Day. Several important bills are expected to be tabled.

Parliamentary affairs minister Mukesh Mahaling said the government is prepared to discuss any issue raised by the opposition and welcomes constructive proposals.

“We hope fruitful discussions will take place on matters of State interest. Issues such as the Capital Region Ring Road project, sanctioned with around Rs 8,000 crore from the Centre, two semiconductor manufacturing units worth Rs 4,500 crore, and four waterway projects will also be discussed. These reflect the scope of development under a double-engine government,” he told reporters.

The ruling BJP has indicated that the session will highlight central government investments in Odisha and the state’s development priorities.

The opposition, however, has announced plans to corner the government on a range of issues. BJD leader Pramila Mallik said her party will raise matters related to farmers’ distress, rising crime against women and students, hooliganism, gangrape cases, and the stalled metro rail project.

Congress too sharpened its attack. Senior leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati alleged that the state government delayed convening the House “out of fear.” He claimed, “Women abuse, girl student abuse, suicides of women and girl students have shaken the State. The government was scared to face questions, hence it did not convene the session earlier.”

With both treasury and opposition benches preparing for a showdown, the monsoon session is expected to witness heated debates, sharp exchanges, and crucial discussions on Odisha’s development and governance challenges.
