BHUBANESWAR: One person was critically injured and several others sustained burn injuries after an LPG cylinder explosion triggered a fire in a house in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred at Sunathar village under Purushottampur police limits in the district.

According to preliminary reports, the explosion took place while an LPG cylinder was being connected inside the house. A sudden fire reportedly broke out during the process and quickly escalated into a powerful blast, causing panic in the village and extensive damage to the house.

Prasanna Nahak, a local resident, suffered critical burn injuries in the incident, while at least two others were also injured, police said.

Villagers rushed to the spot soon after the explosion and rescued the injured persons from the burning house before shifting them to a nearby healthcare facility. Nahak was later referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur due to the severity of his injuries.

Fire services personnel reached the spot and brought the blaze under control, preventing the fire from spreading further. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The exact cause of the explosion was yet to be ascertained, though initial suspicion points to a possible gas leak or technical fault during the cylinder connection process, officials said.
