Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav has justified enforcement of Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying that law should be same for everyone in a country.

Addressing a government function at Indore, Mr. Yadav said that the UCC is based on the principle of ‘One country, one law for everyone’ and said that why the law should be discriminatory against ‘our Muslim sisters’ and this discrimination can be removed with the implementation of the UCC.

“If (Lord) Ram had one marriage, the same can be expected from Rahim. Our Muslim sisters are also our sisters. Why should they face discrimination”, he said while strongly advocating for the implementation of the UCC.

Mr. Yadav said that his government has initiated steps to implement UCC in the state.

A high-level committee, headed by retired supreme court Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai, was constituted in April this year to prepare the UCC draft bill for the state after consulting with the stakeholders.

The committee has submitted the UCC draft bill along with its recommendations after taking suggestions from ten lakh people across 55 districts in the state, recently.

A large number of Muslims had taken part in the exercise, sources said.

Mr. Yadav said that his government has decided to table the UCC bill in the upcoming five-day monsoon session of the Assembly, scheduled to commence on July 20.

The proposed bill will be debated in the House before its passage.

The committee had been asked to prepare the UCC draft bill, taking into account the socio-economic condition of Madhya Pradesh.

Sources said that the committee has suggested keeping the tribals out of the purview of the proposed UCC bill.
