SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday wrote to leaders of major political parties, urging them to push the Central government for legislation to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood in the ongoing Parliament session.
In his two-page letter to over 40 parties, Abdullah emphasised that restoring statehood is not a concession but a vital "course correction."
Abdullah’s appeal marks nine months since his government unanimously passed a resolution for immediate statehood restoration, which he personally presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with assurances of progress.
His letter to political parties coincides with the sixth anniversary of the revocation of J&K's special status and its bifurcation. Abdullah warned that statehood must remain a sacred constitutional right, not a discretionary favor from the Centre, to prevent a dangerous precedent.
The letter framed statehood restoration as a step toward healing the wounds caused by the 2019 revocation of Article 370 and the subsequent loss of statehood. It underscored the importance of statehood for empowering the people of J&K and ensuring their rights are protected under the Constitution. The letter positioned the restoration as a matter of justice and democratic principle, not merely a regional issue.
