Odisha: Woman Killed, Buried In Septic Tank After Refusing Alcoholic Husband’s Demand For Subhadra Money

BHUBANESWAR: A woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and her body buried inside a septic tank after she refused to hand over money received under Odisha’s Subhadra Yojana for buying alcohol, in a shocking incident in Dhenkanal district, police said on Saturday.
The gruesome incident came to light at Juang Sahi in Indipur under Sadar police limits after the woman’s four children alerted neighbours to a fight between their parents. During a subsequent search, neighbours reportedly spotted her hand protruding from a septic tank in the backyard and alerted the police.
The deceased was allegedly attacked with a wooden stick late on Friday night following an argument with her husband, Girish Pradhan. Police later recovered her body from the pit and arrested the accused.
According to the woman’s family, the couple had gone together earlier on Friday to collect the Subhadra financial assistance. The husband allegedly demanded the money to buy alcohol, but she refused to give it to him, leading to a quarrel.
Her brother, Ashok Pradhan, alleged that Girish was drunk when he assaulted his wife.
“He started beating her because he was drunk and also wanted the Subhadra money. At night, he killed her and buried her in the pit. They had both gone to collect the money. He dragged her from the shop to their home,” he alleged.
The woman did not appear on Saturday morning, following which her four children reportedly approached neighbours and told them about the altercation they had witnessed between their parents.
Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Indurekha said police received information about the incident at around 9 am and immediately reached the spot.
“There was a fight between the couple. The husband killed the wife and buried her in the backyard. We came and recovered the body,” she said.
The body was subsequently taken to the government hospital for postmortem after the necessary proceedings before the Executive Magistrate, the SP said.
A scientific team also visited the spot and collected evidence. Police have arrested Girish and recreated the crime scene with the accused as part of the investigation.
