The alleged murder of a juvenile at Lower Balijatra Ground on the Mahanadi riverbank in Cuttack has taken a new turn, with police detaining one juvenile on Monday in connection with the case. Investigators suspect that previous enmity may have led to the killing, while a possible love-triangle angle linked to social media interactions is also being examined.

According to police, the incident allegedly occurred between 7 am and 9 am on Saturday, when three juveniles arrived at the spot in a vehicle. An argument reportedly broke out among them, following which one of them was allegedly killed. The other two suspected assailants fled the scene.

Police examined CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and used human intelligence to identify the victim and trace the suspected assailants. One juvenile was subsequently detained and produced before the Principal Magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board (PMJJB) on Monday.

The deceased was a school student, while the two juveniles allegedly involved in the crime are college students, police said.

The body was reportedly spotted by people heading towards the river for a bath. They alerted the police, following which Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo and personnel from the Cantonment police station reached the spot and launched an investigation. A scientific team and a sniffer dog were also deployed to collect evidence.

The deceased, a native of Banki town, had been staying in a rented accommodation in Cuttack’s Raja Bagicha area. Police informed his family members and were investigating the circumstances and motive behind the killing.

Speaking to reporters, the Cuttack DCP said senior officers and a scientific team reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Investigators examined extensive CCTV footage and gathered crucial clues, including footage tracing the victim’s movements towards the crime scene and thereafter.

“Based on the evidence, we have detained a juvenile,” the DCP said, adding that police had information about another suspect and were conducting searches to trace him.

The senior officer said investigators were examining whether a possible love triangle or disputes arising from social media comments or messages had triggered resentment between the juveniles. The victim and the suspected assailant were reportedly known to each other.
