BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Police have arrested the wife of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan from Odisha's Kandhamal district on charges of allegedly abetting his suicide, officials said on Sunday.

The accused was produced before a local court after her arrest and remanded to judicial custody.

The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar Behera of Baliguda in Kandhamal district, allegedly consumed poison on July 7 and later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to police, preliminary investigation revealed that the CRPF jawan had been under severe mental stress due to prolonged marital discord. Investigators said the couple had been facing frequent disputes for a considerable period. Police also examined multiple complaints allegedly filed by the woman against her husband and his family during the course of the investigation.

Police further claimed to have found evidence suggesting that the accused was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with another CRPF jawan. Investigators believe the developments had aggravated the deceased's mental distress before he allegedly took the extreme step.

Following Behera's death, his family lodged a complaint with Baliguda Police, alleging that his wife had driven him to die by suicide.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched a detailed investigation. Officials said evidence collected during the probe pointed to the woman's alleged role in abetting the suicide, following which she was arrested.

Police said the investigation was continuing and another individual has also come under suspicion in connection with the case. Efforts are underway to establish the sequence of events and ascertain the role of all those allegedly involved.

Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation, police added.
