Bhubaneswar: A tragic accident in Sikkim has left at least one tourist dead and eight others missing after a vehicle carrying tourists plunged nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta river on Thursday evening. Among the missing is Odisha BJP leader Itishree Jena from Jajpur Road, who was reportedly traveling with her family.
The accident occurred between Chungthang and Munshithang while the group was returning from Gangtok. The vehicle, which was carrying 11 people, including the driver, reportedly lost control on the hilly terrain and skidded off the road into the river below.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tourists were primarily from Odisha and West Bengal. Rescue operations are currently underway, but challenging terrain and poor visibility are hampering efforts.
Latest reports indicate that two people, including one of Itishree's two minor sons, were rescued in critical condition. Nine people, including her other son, were still missing.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Upon hearing of the accident, CM Patnaik promptly contacted the Sikkim government to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
In a swift response, the Chief Minister Majhi deployed a team of officials from Odisha to Sikkim to oversee the rescue operations and provide assistance. The team will also ensure that the injured receive proper medical care and help facilitate the safe return of Odisha passengers.
The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that all necessary steps were being taken to support those affected by this tragic incident.
