Number Plate HR88B8888 Sets Record as India’s Costliest Registration at Rs 1.17 Crore
The Haryana auction saw intense bidding, with 45 applicants vying for the sought-after VIP number
The registration number HR88B8888 has become India’s most expensive vehicle number after being sold for Rs 1.17 crore during an online auction conducted by the Haryana government on Wednesday. The VIP plate attracted the highest interest this week, with 45 bidders competing for it on the fancy.parivahan.gov.in portal.
The bidding opened at a base price of Rs 50,000, climbing rapidly during the final hours. By noon, the amount had touched Rs 88 lakh, before eventually closing at the record-breaking Rs 1.17 crore mark at 5 pm.
Haryana conducts weekly e-auctions for premium vehicle registration numbers. Applications can be submitted between Friday evening and Monday morning, followed by active bidding until Wednesday.
Last week, another special number, HR22W2222, fetched Rs 37.91 lakh, highlighting a growing trend of high-value bidding for personalised number plates in the state.
The newly sold number, HR88B8888, stands out visually because the letter ‘B’ resembles the number ‘8’, giving the plate an almost continuous “88888” pattern — a combination considered auspicious and rare by many buyers.
According to officials, the breakdown of the number is as follows:
-
HR: Haryana registration code
-
88: Specific RTO jurisdiction
-
B: Vehicle series
-
8888: VIP numeric sequence
With rising demand for unique and symbolic number plates, authorities say such high-value auctions are becoming increasingly common, especially among luxury vehicle
