Nirmal Readies Flood Manual 2025
The Kadam project gates, which malfunctioned during previous flood events, have now been repaired.
ADILABAD: Nirmal district officials have finalised the Flood Manual 2025 to tackle potential flood threats during the monsoon season and ensure the safety of villagers living along the banks of the Kadam River. The manual outlines precautionary and response measures in case floodwaters are released downstream from the Kadam project.
The Kadam project gates, which malfunctioned during previous flood events, have now been repaired. Officials hope the gates will function smoothly and be operated as needed. The state government allocated `9 crore in 2024 for their repair, following the flood crises of 2022 and 2023 when several gates were stuck due to poor maintenance, leaving officials unable to discharge excess water in time.
Floods over the last two years caused panic among residents in low-lying areas, with several villages inundated and people evacuated. The memory of those events still haunts communities living downstream of the Kadam project. This year, coordinated efforts will be made to respond swiftly should a flood situation arise.
Officials have also identified flood-prone villages under the Kadam and other projects in the erstwhile Adilabad district. A mandal-level communication plan has been developed to strengthen disaster response efforts, including rescue operations, relief distribution and community preparedness.
Nirmal collector Abhilasha Abhinav said the district has experienced several major flood events in recent years due to heavy monsoon rains. To avoid similar crises, the administration has prepared the flood manual, which was recently released by revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
The collector said an early warning alarm system would be installed in 12 flood-vulnerable villages in Dasthurabad and Kadam mandals. These alarms will alert people in case of rising water levels and help facilitate timely evacuations.
Major rivers such as the Godavari, Kadam and Swarna, along with the Gaddanna stream, pass through Nirmal district. During the monsoon, floodwaters often enter downstream villages and urban colonies, inundating houses even in Nirmal and Bhainsa towns.
