Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Launched at GRSE

New 3,000-tonne warship to boost Indian Navy’s patrol, rescue and anti-piracy capabilities

Kolkata: Defence PSU, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), launched a next-generation offshore patrol vessel, Sanghmitra, for the Indian Navy on Wednesday. Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan and his wife, Sarita, attended the ceremony.

The warship, under construction at the GRSE, will be around 113 metres long and 14.6 metres wide with a displacement of 3,000 Tons. It will achieve speeds of up to 23 knots with an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at a speed of 14 knots and has a draught requirement of only 4 metres.

The vessel, according to GRSE, will participate in ‘Out of Area’ contingency operations, non-combatant evacuation, convoy operations, anti-piracy missions and counter-infiltration operations apart from taking on poachers and traffickers, and responding to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue missions. Vice Admiral Vatsayan praised GRSE’s role in keeping the Navy supplied with advanced warships.
