NEW DELHI: Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah is expected to visit India later this month on his first bilateral foreign trip since assuming office in March 2026, Nepal foreign secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said on Wednesday.
The visit is likely to take place in the last week of November, possibly between November 23 and 25, although the dates have not been officially announced.
Foreign secretary Vikram Misri, who is on a two-day visit to Kathmandu, held talks with Rai on Wednesday to prepare the groundwork for the visit.
Rai described Misri's visit as instrumental in laying the groundwork for Shah's trip to New Delhi.
The two foreign secretaries discussed bilateral cooperation in connectivity, trade, energy, development projects and people-to-people relations. Misri also met Nepal's finance minister Swarnim Wagle to discuss economic cooperation.
Shah is expected to seek India's financial assistance for reconstruction following devastating flash floods in Nepal. Connectivity, trade and infrastructure development are also likely to figure prominently in the discussions. He is also expected to address a business conclave in New Delhi.
Referring to the damage caused by flooding in the Bhotekoshi region, Misri said India and Nepal had stood by each other in difficult times.
He said India had already extended assistance and stood ready to consider further requests for reconstruction and rehabilitation projects.
"We have extended assistance but we recognise that this incident has caused enormous damage and destruction to the infrastructure of Nepal," Misri said.
A Nepal foreign ministry statement said the talks covered the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and underscored the strong ties between the two neighbours.
