New Delhi: Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing began a five-day visit to India on Saturday, his first foreign trip after assuming office, aimed at resetting ties and strengthening bilateral cooperation with New Delhi.
During the visit, he is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The discussions are expected to focus on trade, connectivity, border security, and efforts to curb terror, drug trafficking and human trafficking, along with defence cooperation.
External affairs minister S. Jaishankar met the Myanmar President ahead of the talks. “Pleased to call on President U Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar in New Delhi today. Appreciate his positive sentiment towards deepening our longstanding bilateral cooperation. Look forward to his meeting with PM Modi to advance our partnership for peace, progress and prosperity,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Bodh Gaya, where he visited the Mahabodhi Temple and offered prayers. He also meditated under the Bodhi Tree and visited the Sujata Temple in Bakraur and the Burmese Monastery. He was received by Bihar Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd).
External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “A warm welcome to President U Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar on his arrival in Bodh Gaya. His visit reflects the strong spiritual, historical and people-to-people ties that bind our two countries and the depth of our ongoing cooperation.”
The Myanmar President will participate in the Myanmar-India business forum on Sunday and travel to Mumbai on Tuesday for industry interactions and site visits.
Min Aung Hlaing had ruled Myanmar for the past five years following a military coup and returned to power as President after parliamentary elections held in April. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh attended his inauguration.
