A Mumbai couple refused to pay a pizza delivery agent for not speaking Marathi, igniting widespread condemnation after the incident was captured on video.

A disturbing incident in Mumbai's Bhandup suburb has ignited a fierce debate on linguistic discrimination after a video surfaced showing a couple refusing to pay a pizza delivery agent because he did not speak Marathi.

The delivery agent, identified as Rohit Lavare, arrived at the couple's residence to deliver their order when they insisted he converse in Marathi. Despite Lavare's attempts to explain that he was not fluent in the language, the couple persisted, stating, "Speak Marathi or we won't pay." The confrontation escalated, with Lavare questioning the compulsion, asking, "Is there a compulsion to speak in Marathi? But why?" The woman responded, "Yes, this is how it is here."

Lavare recorded the exchange on his phone, capturing the couple's refusal to pay and their insistence on linguistic conformity. At one point, the woman objected to being recorded, stating, "You cannot record me, while I can [record you]." The video concludes with Lavare leaving without payment.

The footage quickly went viral on social media platforms, sparking widespread condemnation. Users expressed outrage over the couple's behavior, with many emphasizing the importance of linguistic diversity and condemning the imposition of language. One user commented, "As a Marathi, I apologize to all Indians. This is not us." The incident has reignited discussions about language imposition and cultural sensitivity in India's diverse society. While Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra, critics argue that enforcing language preferences in such a manner is discriminatory and undermines the nation's multicultural fabric.

As of now, there has been no official statement from Domino's Pizza regarding the incident. Authorities have not indicated whether any legal action will be taken against the couple. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining harmony in a linguistically diverse nation and the importance of mutual respect and understanding among its citizens.
