BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav has indicated that many Muslims are in favour of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

He said that the committee constituted for preparing the draft bill for the UCC, proposed to be tabled in the upcoming monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, has received many constructive suggestions on the issue from the Muslims also, many of whom are of the opinion that such a law is needed.

“A committee has been formed to prepare a draft bill of the UCC after consulting the stakeholders and taking suggestions from various sections of the society. The committee has received lakhs of suggestions. The panel also received many constructive suggestions from Muslims, many of whom are of the view that such a law is needed”, Mr. Yadav told reporters at Indore late on Friday.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to implement the UCC in the state, saying that the UCC bill will be placed in the House during the upcoming monsoon session.

A six-member committee headed by retired supreme court judge Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai has been constituted in April this year to prepare the draft bill of the UCC after taking suggestions from people in various walks of life and going through such bills passed in the BJP-ruled states of Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam.

The panel has been asked to submit its report within 60 days.

The five-day monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly is scheduled to commence on July 20.
