Bhopal: Two friends in Panna in Madhya Pradesh have literally dug out a fortune when they mined a 15.34 carat gem-quality diamond in the plot of land, taken on lease by them from the state government.
Satish Khatik (24) and Sajid Mohammad (23), both from very humble backgrounds, have found the diamond piece while digging the lease land in Panna, known for the fine quality diamond reserves.
The fortune changing yield from the land, taken on lease from the state government on November 19 this year, is worth around Rs 60 lakh, according to the local gemstone valuer Anupam Singh.
The diamond was deposited with the district mining office in Panna for auction, as per the government rule.
Proceeds of the auction will be given to them after deduction of the commission, officials of the district mining office said.
Khatik runs a meat shop in Panna city whereas Mohammad sells fruits.
Both of them have the only plan to spend the money they will get from the sale of the diamond, to hold the marriage of their sisters.
The state government gives small plots of lands on lease to the locals for mining diamond and the diamonds found in these lands were later deposited with the district mining office which auctions them twice a year.
Proceeds of the auction were given to the owner of the diamond after deducting the commission fixed by the government.
Locals take lands on lease with the hope of mining diamonds but a very few of them prove to be lucky to find them.
