Bhopal, July 21: A sustained campaign on social media over the past few weeks by an influencer in an advanced stage of pregnancy has finally moved the government to allocate funds to build at least a fair-weather road in her village in Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh.

Leela Sahu, 22, had recently invited sarcasm from the local MP Dr Rajesh Mishra for highlighting the miserable condition of the road in her village of Khuddi Khurd, nearly 50 km from district headquarters of Sidhi, in her YouTube channel. On Monday, she reported that the muddy road was being levelled for construction.

Dr Mishra, the BJP MP from Sidhi, had commented: “Unko uthva lenge (We will get her picked up).” He had hastened to add that the road would be built. His comments had attracted severe criticism from several quarters as ‘insensitive’.

Reacting to the road work on Monday, the YouTuber who has over 23 lakh followers told this newspaper: “It is such a big relief to see that work for the construction of the road has started. I am in my ninth month of pregnancy. I am now hopeful of visiting the district hospital at Sidhi by an ambulance from my village for my delivery.”

She said at least six women in her village are currently in various stages of pregnancy. According to her, the road is being laid with the money from the MLA’s constituency fund.

Local MLA, the veteran Congress leader Ajey Singh, was not available for confirmation. He was at a two-day training camp for party legislators in Mandu in Madhya Pradesh.

J.P. Mishra, general manager of the PM Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Madhya Pradesh told this newspaper that his department was not involved in construction of the road.

The YouTuber, who made her debut on social media in 2022, initially started making content on themes revolving around village life, and later in 2024 switched over to local issues by highlighting the problems facing the common people in her area.
