Bhopal: A 25-year-old youth suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed when he was barely 100 meters from the finishing line in the 21-km-long marathon, held in Indore in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.

Aryan Todi, who was running his fifth marathon at the Indore Marathon on Sunday, was given CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) by a doctor present on the occasion before being rushed to the Mumbai Hospital in Indore.

Doctors in the hospital declared him dead, Indore additional deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Rajesh Dandotiya said.

The deceased youth, a native of Kolkata, was staying with his uncle in Indore, according to the police officer.

His father was informed by the police about the tragic incident.

The annual event, christened Indore Marathon, is supported by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Madhya Pradesh police, and Indore district administration.

Sunday’s event was the 12th edition of the marathon.

The marathon was launched 12 years ago to campaign for a ‘Healthy and Smart Indore’.

Indore, which has been chosen the cleanest city of India in the Swachh Bharat survey consecutively for the last eight years, is currently in the news for the wrong reason due to the death of two dozen people in Bhagirathpura locality in the city, caused by the contaminated water.

The Madhya Pradesh high court has recently constituted a judicial commission headed by a retired judge of the supreme court to probe the reason for contamination of water and deaths caused by it.
