MP: 47 Men Die Multiple Times Due To 'Snake Bites' For Compensation

Bhopal: An alleged ‘snake bite scam’ looms large in Madhya Pradesh with bizarre cases of ‘fake deaths’ of 47 people in snake bites in a district in the state coming to light.
Madhya Pradesh unit Congress president Jitu Patwari on Friday exposed the alleged scam, saying that 47 people in Seoni district in Madhya Pradesh were shown to have succumbed to snake bites multiple times to get compensation each time from the government.
The state government releases a compensation of Rs four lakh each in snakebite deaths of people.
“As many as 47 people of Seoni district were declared dead multiple times in snake bites and each time a compensation of Rs four lakh was withdrawn, resulting in a scam to the tune of Rs 11.26 crore”, Mr. Patwari said while addressing a press conference here.
He alleged that a person was shown being bitten by snakes 38 times in different documents and each time a compensation of Rs four lakh was granted.
According to him, the list of fake dead persons showed that a person died 38 times in snake bites in different documents, while another person declared dead 19 times.
An investigation into the matter was done by divisional joint director of Jabalpur (Treasuries and Accounts) Rohit Singh Kaushal recently who has submitted his report to the Seoni district collector ‘for action’, sources said.
Irregularities were cited in the report, sources said on Friday.
