New Delhi:A Prime Minister-led panel on Wednesday held a meeting to select a new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and eight other information commissioners. Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi held a meeting at PM’s chamber in the Parliament to pick the new CIC and eight information commissioners.

Sources said that during the meeting, which lasted for over an hour, names for next vigilance commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) were also discussed.

Rahul Gandhi is learnt to have submitted a dissent note at the meeting. “In the meeting, Rahul Gandhi objected to the names proposed by the government and registered his disagreement in writing,” sources said.

Sources claimed that Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns that the government is making efforts to undermine the autonomy and independence of institutions meant to ensure transparency and accountability. “Rahul Gandhi’s dissent is in line of continuation of those long-standing objections raised by him,” sources added.

Earlier this month, the Centre has informed the Apex Court that the Modi-led selection panel will meet on December 10 to select and recommend names for these posts.
