A mob attacked an Assam Rifles camp in Manipur's Senapati district, setting vehicles ablaze after a search operation targeting alleged NSCN (IM) ceasefire violations.

Tension gripped Manipur's Senapati district after a mob vandalised an Assam Rifles camp, pelted stones, damaged property and torched vehicles on Tuesday night, hours after the force launched a search operation based on intelligence inputs about alleged ceasefire violations by armed NSCN (IM) cadres.

According to the Defence PRO, the Assam Rifles launched the operation following credible intelligence regarding the presence of armed cadres in the Makuilongdi area, around two kilometres west of the designated NSCN (IM) camp at Oklong.

Security sources said intelligence reports and social media posts indicated that armed NSCN (IM) cadres were moving outside designated camps carrying weapons and wearing uniforms, allegedly in violation of the Ceasefire Ground Rules.

The Defence PRO said the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG) was informed about the reported violations and the associated security concerns.

During the operation, Assam Rifles columns approaching Makuilongdi and Oklong villages were stopped by local residents, including women. The force exercised restraint and held discussions with local representatives, assuring them that the operation was aimed solely at maintaining security and peace.

According to the statement, the Assam Rifles also assured local representatives that troops would not enter any village without the consent of the competent authorities.

Security sources said tension escalated after messages circulated on social media claiming that a confrontation had developed between the Assam Rifles and the NSCN (IM)'s Huthrong Brigade Headquarters under Oklong village. The messages allegedly urged people to assemble in Senapati town for "necessary action".

At around 9 pm, a large number of protesters gathered in Senapati town and marched towards the Assam Rifles Company Operating Base (COB). The mob reached the camp about 30 minutes later and allegedly began pelting stones and damaging property despite the withdrawal of the search columns.

The Defence PRO said security personnel used minimum force to disperse the crowd, firing blank rounds and tear-gas shells in coordination with the Manipur Police. Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were also deployed to help restore law and order.

During the violence, one Assam Rifles light vehicle was set ablaze while two trucks were overturned and damaged. Security sources said an Alto car parked outside the camp gate and a nearby waiting shed were also torched.

Officials said the situation in Senapati is now under control. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Manipur, where authorities continue to monitor the movement of armed groups and compliance with ceasefire arrangements.
