NEW DELHI: The body of 19-year-old Delhi University student Sneha Debnath, a resident of Tripura, was recovered from the Yamuna River near the Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening after an extensive search operation. Sneha had been missing for more than 110 hours, last seen near the Signature Bridge.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha posted on X that the Chief Minister’s Office became aware of Sneha’s disappearance and had “promptly issued instructions to the police to take immediate and appropriate action.” Following confirmation of her disappearance, Delhi Police launched a joint search with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local units, combing areas from Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida. Despite rain and rising water levels, her body was ultimately found along the riverbank near the Geeta Colony flyover.

An FIR has been registered at the Mehrauli police station. According to the Delhi Police, Sneha’s family filed a missing-person report on July 7 after discovering a handwritten note indicating her intent to jump from the Signature Bridge. Technical surveillance traced her last known location to that bridge. A cab driver confirmed dropping her there, and eyewitnesses reported seeing a girl standing on the bridge before she disappeared.

Investigators also learned that Sneha had sent distressing messages to close friends via email and messaging apps in the early hours of July 7. Friends told police she had been emotionally distressed for months. Her family and friends have raised serious concerns about nonfunctional CCTV cameras on and around the Signature Bridge, which spans the jurisdictions of four or five different police stations. According to a close friend, although individual stations installed cameras, none were operational; only a speed-detection still camera was working, which does not record video.
