Tamil Nadu: Missing Youth Was Beaten to death by Rehab Centre Staff

S.R Varunkanth, a 24 year old youth who had been reportedly missing from the rehabilitation centre near Pollachi was found brutally beaten to death by the trustees and staff at the facility on May 12. Police have arrested four people in connection with the crime.

The family admitted Varunkanth in Yuthira Charitable Trust (Special Children Care and Training Centre) Rathinasabapathy Puram in Pollachi on February 4, 2025.

According to FIR Varunkanth’s parents complained he had Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and was sent to the Rehabilitation. The parents were to visit their son once every six months. But on May 15 Varunkanth's father, Ravikumar, received information on May 15 that he had gone missing when all the inmates in the centre were taken to the Aliyar dam. But the father later received video evidence where their son was shown with serious injuries and was severely beaten by the staff. Ravikumar filed a complaint and the investigation began.
Police on Saturday said that the youth had been murdered on May 12 after they refused to take Varunkanth to a theme park in Mettupalayam claiming that he was not obeying them. But they took other inmates to the theme park which eventually led him to behave aggressively. The trustees and staff at the home got angry and started beating him with cricket bats and plastic pipes. They continued assaulting the youth till he fell unconscious and died.
According to the Police the two suspects were detained, eventually they confessed to the murder. They had wrapped the youth's body in plastic and had buried him near Nadupuni in S Nagore.The decomposed body of Varunkanth was exhumed on Saturday evening and a spot postmortem was carried out.
The police had formed six special teams and arrested Giriram, 36, a native of Thiruvannamalai, who worked as a trustee of the rehabilitation home, another trustee's father Senthil Babu, 54, from Pollachi, Nithish, 26, staff of the home, and Ranganayaki, 36, from Thoppampatti near Pollachi.
