KOLKATA: The police have arrested one person and recovered 295 medals from him for stealing them from Padma awardee swimmer Bula Choudhury's ancestral house at Hindmotor in Hooghly of West Bengal two days ago.

The list of recovered valuables however does not include her Padmashree award, a miniature design worn by the recipients traditionally at various official occasions. The cops are hunting for it. The accused, Krishna Chowdhury, is from Rishra in the district.

The theft came to light on August 15 when the eminent sportsperson’s brother Milan Choudhury who stays nearby visited their ancestral house, Sundar Bari, at Debaipukur for cleaning with a labourer and found the backdoor broken and the medals stolen from the showcase.

On Sunday, deputy commissioner of police (Serampore) Arnab Biswas of the Chandanagar Police Commissionerate said that 295 medals were recovered from Krishna leading to his arrest with the help of the criminal investigation department of the state police.

He added that the theft took place between August 12 and 14. Sounding happy, Ms Choudhury thanked the police for the prompt recovery and hoped the same for the remaining items.
