Mamata Vows To Challenge Detention Of Bengali Migrants
“Just wait and see. No one should be panicked. We will do our job to protect our people. No one can grab Bengal. People from other states also work here. Will it look good if we start judging them also?”: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee
KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday vowed to "challenge" the detention of Bengali speaking migrant workers in various camps outside the state on the suspicion of Bangladeshi nationals at "proper time."
She made the assertion after the Haryana government detained 52 migrant workers from Bengal in its territory and sought the Bengal government for their verification. The CM said at the state secretariat Nabanna, "This is illegal and an insult to Bengal. It will be challenged at proper time.”
She added, “Just wait and see. No one should be panicked. We will do our job to protect our people. No one can grab Bengal. People from other states also work here. Will it look good if we start judging them also?”
On Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's step down from the post suddenly on "health" grounds, Ms Banerjee however said, "I don't have any comments about it. Let us see the things. Let us watch. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely okay," to indicate the reason for his resignation lies somewhere else.
With an eye on the next year's Assembly Election in the state, the CM also announced the launch of a new social welfare initiative, Amader Para, Amader Samadhan (Our Locality, Our Solution) from August 2 through which the government will provide Rs 10 lakhs in each of the 80,000 booths in the state.
This is the first such initiative in the country which will allow people to give their opinions and mutually decide the issues they need to get it resolved in their booths using the fund or collectively decide how to utilise the fund in each booth.
Ms Banerjee said, “Many times, we notice that there are small issues like setting up a tap or an electric pole that need attention in localities. To solve such minor issues, we have taken up this new programme.”
