Maharashtra: VHP’s ‘Hindu-Only’ Garba Call Trigger Controversy In Maharashtra

The VHP has issued guidelines asking organizers in Maharashtra to restrict entry at Navratri Garba and Dandiya events to Hindus only. Organizers have been advised to verify attendees using their Aadhaar cards. The guidelines also suggest applying a tilak on the foreheads of participants to confirm their Hindu identity.

The VHP has stated that Garba is a form of worship rather than mere entertainment, making it unsuitable for those who do not practice idol worship.

SP MLA Rais Shaikh strongly condemned the move, labeling it an unconstitutional ‘fatwa’ that fosters communal division. He demanded that the Maharashtra Government clarify its official stance and take proactive measures to prevent fringe groups from enforcing illegal bans.

“Festivals bring harmony to society. In India, there is a tradition of people from other religions participating in each other’s festivals. People from other communities happily participate in Eid and Ramadan celebrations. However, the VHP and Bajrang Dal are deliberately targeting Muslims,” said Shaikh.

He further noted that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had recently stated in New York that “a Hindu who says he does not want Muslims is not a Hindu.” “While issuing its ‘fatwa’ seeking to ban Muslims from Garba-Dandiya events, the VHP appears to have ignored Bhagwat’s statement. Putting forward one set of views while acting in the opposite manner has been the policy of the RSS and BJP so far,” Shaikh said.

“This is cultural policing by the VHP and Bajrang Dal. The VHP’s fatwa banning Muslims is against the Indian Constitution. The state government should take note of this directive because such extremist positions could potentially create a law-and-order situation,” added Shaikh.
